100% Disposable body piercing: an attainable goal

Research indicates that we face either the beginning of a disposable era in our field, or time for the invention of better pre-cleaning products. Equipment will never get clean enough reliably for entirely safe reuse by the methods currently available in the average body modification practice. So far, the best science has to offer is not good enough to reprocess surgical instruments in hospitals, even with tremendously superior decontamination and sterilization facilities to outmatch what even the most well funded body artists could reasonably afford.

Consider the benefits of having no biohazard room, no mess, no contaminated objects stored or transferred other than a biohazard/sharps container.
Think of the time you will save, and factor that in to your budget. Charge appropriately to cover the cost of supplies.

You shouldn't have to bother prepackaging the marking and cleaning equipment when you can run it all at once. Sterilized gloves such as SafeSkin purple nitrile sterilized gloves are less than $0.40 a pair. You could also use pre-sterilized gauze, about $0.03 each for individually wrapped pads. Pre-inked gentian applicator marking implements: about $0.04 each. It's less than a dime for your prep, with no pre-packaging time necessary.

If you choose to continue to use clamps or tubes until you are comfortable without them, we suggest use them once only, and dispose of them. The metal ones need the toothy grip smoothed off with a grinder, but after 30 seconds worth of work with a $30 bench grinder or Dremel, they are now a customized piercing instrument.

Disposability: The main thing about piercing without clamps is learning good techniques for secure grip. We can help you learn more and supervise your practice, just call, email or stop by the studio. We use sterilized gauze 4" or larger to align and grip the tissue to be pierced. We suggest practice on leather, chamois, denim or yourself until you get the hang of it. With practice it becomes easier, quicker, gentler and more accurate than a clamped procedure.
